Olympic Hot Springs-Boulder Creek Recreation Area, Olympic Nat’l Park

Aether as perspective on science

Aether turned out not to exist, and the scientific challenges that prompted its developement were addressed, nominally solved & pragmatically retired, by other means.  The ‘dual nature’ of light (particle-wave), and all electromagnetic radiation is the accepted answer.  The problem is, we can no more directly demonstrate the existence of these light ‘particles’, than we could the proposed aether. Parsimony in science & technology

Parsimony in science & scholastics – aka Occam’s Razor – advises us not make a problem any tougher than it has to be.  It’s an essential principle in technology, for troubleshooting & maintainance of our Stuff.  It says the most likely answer or solution, is the most obvious or direct one.  If you flip the switch and the light doesn’t come on, most likely the bulb is burned out, not that you should rewire the house.
